OSHA's New training rule for lift truck operators was finalized on December 1, 1998. The employer shall ensure that their operators of powered industrial trucks are trained, as appropriate, by the following dates:
If the employee is hired before December 1, 1999 the initial training and evaluation of that employee must be completed before December 1, 1999.
If the employee is hired after December 1, 1999 the initial training and evaluation of that employee must be completed before the employee is assigned to operate a powered industrial truck.
Here is the "L" Paragraph of the New OSHA Regulation (Standards - 29 CFR) - 1910.178 that clearly defines the responsibility of the employer.
As an employer, if you choose to ignore the new training rules adopted by OSHA, a minimum fine or penalty of $7,000 for EACH untrained operator can be assessed for non-compliance. OSHA Facts |
